Shows And Movies To Get You Hyped Up For Working Hard!

If I were a better, more responsible individual, I would suggest that you stop binging shows and just start working. But I'm not. So here are 5 shows and movies you can watch to hype yourself up for working hard! (P.S. I haven't covered Indian ones here because they deserve a post of their own)

1. Suits

ree

When I talk about inspiration for hard work in Suits, I'm NOT talking about Mike Ross. Unfortunately, not all of us have an eidetic memory and a cool supportive mentor who sees the potential in us despite all odds. I'm talking about Harvey Specter, Jessica Pearson and Louis Litt and all the other characters whose struggles and passion make the storyline of the show as gripping as it is.

“The only time success comes before work is in the dictionary.” -Harvey Specter

I remember watching the show for the first time 3 years back and while I did not understand all the terms as well as I do now, Suits was probably the first show that made me realize how fun and interesting jobs and work can be when you're passionate about them.

Whether it was Harvey's fight to make it to the managing partner position or Louis' continuous struggle to keep up with him, or Rachel's journey from a paralegal to finally passing the bar, Suits made me root for all of them despite (and maybe because of) their general moral grayness. Not to forget Jessica. You bet I'm still thinking about her when I say "boss lady".

2. The Bold Type

ree

I'm still on Season 2 of this show. However, I couldn't help but add it to this list. The show follows three girls in New York trying to find themselves amid their careers and love lives. Kat, Sutton and Jane are best friends who have each others' backs as they navigate life and make tough decisions to progress in their careers.

And then there is Jacqueline Carlyle. Editor-in-chief of the magazine Scarlet for which the three friends work, Jacqueline is the kind of woman you want to be. Strong, uplifting and persistent, she is open to new ideas and constantly on the lookout for potential in the people who work for her.

“If you can’t do it with feeling, don’t.” -Jacqueline Carlyle

If you ever need to romanticize working hard in a fast-paced city (while donning the coolest outfits ever), give this show a watch!

3. Pursuit of Happyness

ree

Yes, it is "happyness" with a y. Will Smith did a tremendous job in this movie. One would even say that the movie SLAPS. I know. I'm hilarious.

But yes, this movie is one of the most inspiring ones I've ever watched yet. It's based on Chris Gardner's rags to riches story. Chris, who has a son to take care of on top of his own broke life, keeps striving despite all obstacles. The sheer determination he has is some Naruto-level shit.

"You got a dream...You gotta protect it. People can't do somethin' themselves, they wanna tell you you can't do it. If you want somethin', go get it. Period."

If you ever feel like everything is going wrong, if you're losing faith in your efforts or if you just need a pick me up, trust me this movie will help.

4. Dead Poets Society

ree

Don't want to be that kid but I swear I'll watch this film again just for the Dark Academia aesthetic.

The movie follows Todd Anderson, a boy who attends a strict elite boarding school and is continuously subjected to extremely high standards by his parents. An unorthodox English teacher, John Keating, encourages him and his classmates to find their voice and live life fully and freely.

"To quote Whitman, 'O me! O life!... of the questions of these recurring; of the endless trains of the faithless... of cities filled with the foolish; what good amid these, O me, O life?' Answer: that you are here — that life exists, and identity; that the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse. That the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse. What will your verse be?

Besides making the phrase "carpe diem" as famous as it is, Dead Poets Society reminded me just why I like learning new things. Taking a chance, being brave, and learning not for the sake of school but to fulfill the thirst for knowledge (which we all have but is often suppressed because of standardized tests), Dead Poets Society represents all of this in my head.

"No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world."

While most of us don't have passionate teachers like Mr. Keating, we do have access to movies that can remind us to "seize the day and make our lives extraordinary".

5. Gilmore Girls

ree

So this is a bit controversial. The first 3-4 seasons of Gilmore Girls are top-tier motivation and wholesomeness. Lorelai and her daughter Rory live in a small town Stars Hollow (the kind of town Taylor Swift songs are based on) where Lorelai runs an inn. Smart, witty and sarcastic, Lorelai is a 32-year-old who works extremely hard to give Rory the education she missed out on when she was younger. Rory, her 16-year-old daughter wants to get into Harvard (at least, in the beginning) and studies LITERALLY ALL THE TIME.

“I can go from zero to studying in less than 60 seconds!” -Rory Gilmore

She is ambitious, smart, and an altogether nice kid. Unlike her character in the later seasons. But let's not talk about that. The first few seasons are definitely worth the watch. If S1 Rory can't help you romanticize school, no one can.

Actually, Paris can.

Paris Geller is probably my favourite character from the show. She is difficult to deal with, outspoken, sharp, and an absolute icon. If you feel that you're working enough towards your goals right now, you won't feel the same way after watching her.

Motivation falls short more often than not. But every once in a while, watching or reading something inspiring helps to get out of a slump. Do let me know in the comments below if there was any show or movie that got you pumped up for working hard!

What a great list! I enjoyed reading your take on these movies and series. If you haven’t already watched Money Heist, I suggest you do so asap. It deserves a place on this awesome list. Oh and how could I forget Stranger Things! I would love to read an article of recommendation which solely focuses on these binge worthy series that are available on Netflix.
